In the 2014-15 season, the attention was on the U.S. Naval Academy when the season opened. The Navy Midshipmen hosted the inaugural Veterans Classic on their home floor, welcoming the Michigan State Spartans, Tennessee Volunteers, and VCU Rams to take part in the festivities.
The Midshipmen took on Michigan State, and gave the nationally-ranked Spartans all they could handle. The Spartans were able to squeak out a 64 – 59 victory. In the other game, the Tennessee Volunteers couldn’t keep up with the Rams of VCU, falling 85 – 69.
If fans thought that last year’s field was packed with talent, they must be very excited for what’s coming their way in 2015-16. The field for the 2015 Veterans Classic was released on Monday, and it’s one that you’ll want to keep an eye on.
The Florida Gators, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Temple Owls will all descend on Annapolis, MD to open the 2015-16 season, as they take part in the second annual Veterans Classic.
North Carolina is widely considered one of the best teams in the country, as they return the likes of Jodie Meeks, Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige, among others. The Temple Owls have the look of a sleeper team in the American Athletic Conference, while the Florida Gators have a tall order in front of them as they look to contend in the always-tough SEC.
As a part of the experience, players from the visiting schools will get the chance to see what life is like for a midshipman. It’s not something that these students get to see on a regular basis, and it should provide them with a better understanding as to what these young men and women go through to make the USA a better place.
North Carolina opens up against the Temple Owls in the first game of the double-header, while Navy takes on Florida in the second game.
The 2015 Veterans Classic will take place on Friday, November 13th, 2015, which is the first day of the 2015-16 season.
