On the heels of a successful inaugural Mascot Mayhem contest in advance of the 2014-15 basketball season, we set out to try and determine the best mascot in the NCAA for the 2015-16 season.

The contest kicked off on Monday, August 17th, when the hand-picked op 64 mascots from across the NCAA were put into four regions of 16 in an NCAA-tournament style tournament. Fans can vote on their favourite mascots to try and help them advance through the rounds.

Last season’s champion, Harry the Hawk of the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks, retired from mascot competitions, which means there will be a new champion crowned this season.

The contest expanded to increase the overall presence on social media. This season, fans can vote on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as the polls on the website.

In the opening round alone, upwards of 1,500 votes were cast over the various platforms. Instagram was the social media platform that was used the most, with over 500 votes coming in over the two weeks.

Below, you can find the results from the opening round of the contest, plus some notes on how the round played out.
