Last season, the Hampton Pirates took home the MEAC tournament title and punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. After taking down the Manhattan Jaspers in the First Four, they were paired up against the Kentucky Wildcats in the Round of 64.
The Pirates fell short against the Wildcats, but their appearance in the Big Dance led to a heightened sense of optimism for the 2015-16 season.
After a slow start to the season, the Pirates have turned things around in conference action. Hampton is a perfect 7-0 against MEAC opponents this season, and have pushed their record to 11-7 on the season,
Hampton is the only team in the MEAC above .500 on the year overall.
A big reason for their turnaround in conference play has been the play of senior guard Quinton Chievous. After transferring to Hampton from Tennessee, the 6’6” guard has stuffed the stat sheet on a nightly basis for the Pirates.
This past week was no different. Chievous averaged a double-double over Hampton’s two victories, and is the CCR Mid-Major Player of the Week for January 18-24!
Quinton Chievous is a 6’6”, 214-pound senior guard out of Chicago, IL. His arrival in Hampton, VA has taken the Pirates’ program to heights it hadn’t seen in quite some time. He has helped turn the team into a top contender in the MEAC, and he’s been filling up the box score from the first time he stepped on the floor.
Standing at 6’6”. he brings some much-needed size to the back court for the Pirates. On most nights, he has the size advantage over his counter-parts, allowing him to be successful on both ends of the floor.
While he is the Pirates’ leading scorer, he doesn’t shoot the ball from three point range on a regular basis. In 2015-16, he is just 13-of-41 (31.7%) from long distance.
From the floor, Chievous is shooting an impressive 58.4% on the season.
After a big year in 2014-15, Chievous is topping his numbers this time around. Here are his stat lines from his two seasons at Hampton:
’14-15: 25.5 mpg, 10.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 43.8% FG
’15-16: 33.5 mpg, 17.5 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 2.1 apg, 58.4% FG
This past week, Chievous kept up with his double-double averages, putting together an impressive week in Hampton’s two victories.
Against the North Carolina Central Eagles, Chievous recorded 19 points, 8 rebounds, and shot 8-of-11 (72.7%) from the floor in their 70-69 win on the road. Then, on Saturday, Chievous recorded 26 points, 16 rebounds. and 5 assists while shooting 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the floor in the Pirates’ 75-52 home win over the Savannah State Tigers.
To put things into perspective, Chievous averaged 22.5 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 assists per game over the past week, while shooting an impressive 15-of-22 (68.1%) from the floor.
Even though he doesn’t rely on the three pointer like a lot of scoring guards in the country, Chievous is a highly effective guard from all over the floor. He can battle in the paint, finish around the rim, and be an impact player on the glass on both ends of the floor.
Down the stretch this season, Chievous should garner some serious looks from NBA scouts from around the country. He has the talent to take his game to the next level, without question.
After an impressive week that resulted in two more wins for the Hampton Pirates in conference play. Quinton Chievous is this week’s winner of the CCR Mid-Major Player of the Week award!
