STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.Wagner College has hired their next women’s basketball head coach, in Heather Jacobs.

Jacobs was recently at Adelphi University as the head coach of the women’s basketball team, spending six seasons as the coach of the Panthers. We caught up with the newest coach of the Seahawks shortly after the announcement.

Learn some about Coach Jacobs’s coaching philosophy, her main goals for Wagner women’s basketball, what she looks for in a recruit, and more.

What are your main goals for Wagner College’s women’s basketball program?

Raise the standard of the women’s program to the standard of the men’s program is at, and get the program to championship standards.

A coach’s philosophy paves the way for the growth and development of a program on and off the court. How did you develop your coaching philosophy over the years?

My values, I was raised in a blue collar family, I played for a lot of coaches who emphasized the little things. Everything was valued before winning. It’s the way you do something, is the way you do everything. If you cheat a line in a workout, then you are going to cheat in life.

What do you look for in a recruit to come play collegiate basketball for you?

When I recruit, I look first at can they play, are they athletic enough to make a difference right away. I then look for the intangibles, how they take coaching, how they leave the gym, if hold a door, how they react coming off to be subbed out.
