Throughout the 2015-16 season, the Monmouth Hawks were the talk of the town. From their strong play on the court, to their bench celebrations, they quickly became one of America’s favourite teams.

Monmouth wasted little time making a statement last season. In their first game of the season, they went on the road and knocked off the UCLA Bruins inside historic Pauley Pavilion, 84-81 in overtime.

They followed that up with a third-place finish at the AdvoCare Invitational, a run that included an upset win over the then-#17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 70-68, in the opener.

That was just the start of things to come for the Hawks in 2015-16.

More and more people started to focus on Monmouth, and they didn’t disappoint. Admittedly, a good amount of people focused on the bench celebrations, but the on-court product was much more worthy of the attention.

Monmouth finished the year with a record of 28-8 overall, and 17-3 in conference play. They took home the regular season MAAC title, but lost in the tournament finals to the Iona Gaels, 79-76.

Many pegged the Hawks to be an at-large team for the NCAA Tournament after their strong showing, but that dream did not come into focus. The Hawks were awarded a 1-seed in the 2016 NIT, and advanced to the 2nd Round before falling to the eventual champions, the George Washington Colonials.

Heading into 2016-17, the Hawks will undoubtedly have a chip on their shoulder after narrowly missing out on the NCAA Tournament. Their strong play a year ago has resulted in several power conference opponents scheduling them for the upcoming year.

With the likes of Justin RobinsonMicah SeabornJe’lon Hornbeak, and Chris Brady returning from last year’s team, among others, the Hawks have the look of the top contender in the MAAC once again. They also have the talent and experience to pull off more upsets in non-conference play.

On Monday, the Hawks released their non-conference slate for the 2016-17 season. Take a look below to see who the Hawks will take on in advance of MAAC play next season.
