With the success of our annual College Court Report Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year fan votes fresh in our minds, we felt like bringing that energy and level of fan engagement to the regular season.
Introducing, for the first time, the College Court Report Fan-Voted Player of the Week awards!
It’s easy for us to sit back and pick who we feel is our Player of the Week (it’s harder than you may think), but it means more to the players when it comes from the fans themselves. Having fan support goes a long way for the players, and this is a great way to showcase said support.
Each Sunday, we will pick four or five players who fans can then vote for on our Twitter page. On Monday, we will announce our Player of the Week pick, plus the Fan-Voted Player of the Week. (*Note: our personal pick won’t be included in the list of players),
This week’s winner will go down as the first ever winner of the award, and he was also making his collegiate debut at the Division I level on opening weekend.
Junior forward Alize Johnson had his talents on full display on opening weekend, helping lead the Missouri State Bears to a perfect 2-0 record.
Thanks to the fans on social media, Alize Johnson is the College Court Report Fan-Voted Player of the Week for November 11th-13th!
Johnson is in his first season with the Bears after transferring to Missouri State from Frank Phillips College, where he averaged 16.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game last season. He also finished last season shooting 58.8% from the floor.
With last season’s stats in mind, Johnson’s start to the season should come as no surprise.
In Missouri State’s season opener against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Friday, Johnson recorded 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists in the Bears’ 96-62 win. He also went a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor.
Not bad for his debut.
Two nights later, Johnson was back at it once more. On Sunday, he recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double at Missouri State, leading the Bears to the 91-65 win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.
In that game, he went 6-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three point range.
Over the course of the two games, Johnson averaged 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while playing an average of just 26.5 minutes per contest. To top things off, he has gone a combined 14-of-17 (82.4%) from the field in two games.
Alongside guards Dequon Miller and Austin Ruder, and forwards Obediah Church and Chris Kendrix, the addition of Johnson gives Missouri State a formidable roster that can compete with the top teams in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Due to his outstanding debut with the Bears over the first weekend of the 2016-17 season, Missouri State junior forward Alize Johnson is the winner of the College Court Report Fan-Voted Player of the Week award for November 11th-13th!
