The 2016-17 season is in full swing, and what an opening weekend we all witnessed!
On Friday alone, there were several upsets that saw power conference teams lose against teams they should have beaten. The biggest upset of the weekend came on Friday night, when the Wagner Seahawks went on the road and took down the 18th-ranked Connecticut Huskies.
Some teams have played two, or even three, games so far this year, while others have yet to play one. But, over the weekend, there were some impressive individual performances that were worthy of recognition.
So, with that, we decided to hand out some hardware for the first three days.
The UMBC Retrievers opened the season with two impressive wins over the weekend, and junior guard Jairus Lyles was a big factor in both of their wins.
Thanks to a 23-point, 6-rebound performance on Sunday afternoon against the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks, Jairus Lyles has been named the College Court Report Player of the Week for November 11th-13th!
Last season with the Retrievers, Lyles emerged as one of the premier players in the America East Conference. He averaged 23.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest over the year as a sophomore, and shot 47.2% from the field.
Lyles appeared in just 21 games last year, but scored in double-figures in 19 of those contests.
In 2016-17, he has picked up right where he left off.
Against Hood College on Friday, Lyles recorded 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists to lead the Retrievers to the 92-61 win. He also shot 57.1% (8-of-14) from the field.
Two nights later, Lyles was at it again. With the Retrievers in a close game against Eastern Shore, he sealed the game from the free throw line with under 10 seconds to play, giving UMBC the 77-73 road win over the Hawks.
Lyles finished that game with 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, while playing all 40 minutes of the contest.
Over the first two games of the season, Lyles is averaging 2.05 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game, while playing an average of 37 minutes.
It was a well-rounded opening weekend for the junior out of Silver Spring, MD. He had an impact on the game in several different ways, which is what landed him Player of the Week honours.
After leading the UMBC Retrievers to a perfect 2-0 record over the opening weekend, junior guard Jairus Lyles is the College Court Report Player of the Week for November 11th-13th!
