Early season tournaments provide teams with the challenge of playing several games on back-to-back days. It will test the team’s durability, their ability to adjust quickly, and several other key areas that will be detrimental to team success down the road.

With the unpredictability of the games, teams need to also be able to bounce back from big losses, or maintain the winning momentum they generated the night before.

Over the last seven days, the George Mason Patriots have had to do both. They’ve had to bounce back quickly from a blowout loss one night, then build off their first win of the season a day later.

The Patriots took part in the 2016 Gulf Coast Showcase this past week, and after an opening round loss, they reeled off a three-game winning streak to close out the week. A big reason for their 3-1 week was the play of senior guard Marquise Moore.

In the Patriots’ four games, Moore amassed two double-double performances, and averaged a double-double for the week. His level of play over the last week has earned him College Court Report Player of the Week honours for the week of November 21st to 27th!

After a season-opening loss to the Towson Tigers, and starting the season at 1-2 overall, the Patriots looked towards the 2016 Gulf Coast Showcase as a way for them to get on the right track early in 2016-17.

The tournament opened with a 37-point blowout loss against the eventual champions of the event, the Houston Cougars. Moore finished the game with 15 points and 5 rebounds.

In the early-season tournaments, there is a short turnaround between one game and the next, which can lead to issues for some teams. Coming off a big loss is especially tough, but the Patriots weren’t going to let themselves go down without a fight.

They reeled off wins in their next two games in the event, finishing with a 2-1 record, and a fifth-place finish.

Against the Kent State Golden Flashes, Moore tied his career-high with 23 points, and he added 14 rebounds. The next night, he recorded another double-double, this time going for 17 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists in the Patriots’ win over the Bradley Braves.

Then, to top off the week, the Patriots returned home and took down their instate rivals, the James Madison Dukes, on Saturday. Moore recorded 20 points and 8 rebounds in the Patriots’ 80-77 win.

The win over the Dukes capped off a 3-1 week for the Patriots, and a big week individually for Marquise Moore.

For the week, Moore averaged 18.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per contest, while shooting 48.1% from the floor and 67.6% from the free throw line.

Over the Patriots’ first seven games of the year, the 6’2” senior has recorded four double-doubles. He’s averaging 18.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per contest.

With their 1-2 start over the first week, a 3-1 record over the past seven days will undoubtedly boost the confidence of not only Moore, but the whole team moving forwards in 2016-17.

After posting a pair of double-doubles to close out the Gulf Coast Showcase, and helping the Patriots improve their record to 4-3 overall, senior guard Marquise Moore has been named the College Court Report Player of the Week for November 21st to 27th!
