Over the past few years, it seems as though the William & Mary Tribe are always near the top of the standings in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) come conference tournament time.
They emerged as a perennial contender a couple of years back, when guard Marcus Thornton was terrorizing opponents. Fast forward to this year, and it’s another senior guard who is causing all kinds of headaches for opponents.
Meet Great Falls, VA native Daniel Dixon, a four-year senior for the Tribe who is having himself quite the year in 2016-17.
The 6’6” guard has had himself a strong career with the Tribe, but he saved his best season for his last. Dixon is averaging career-best marks in point, rebounds, and assists per game, while shooting a career-best 46.3% from the field.
This past week was more of the same from Dixon. In two wins for the Tribe, he stuffed the box score on both occasions, shooting lights out in the process. He also put up his second 30+ point performance in a span of four games.
In an online poll, Tribe fans came out in full force to show support for their senior guard. Thanks to his big time performances, Daniel Dixon has been selected by the fans as the College Court Report Fan-Voted Player of the Week for January 2 – 8, 2017!
Against the Old Dominion Monarchs on December 29th, 2016, Dixon recorded 36 points in the Tribe’s 65-54 win. He was looking to build off that big performance this past week, and he did just that.
On Monday, the Tribe took on the Hofstra Pride in the first game of 2017 for both programs. While they needed an extra five minutes to settle things, William & Mary came away with the 95-93 win over the Pride.
Dixon went 10-of-20 (50.0%) from the field, scoring 25 points in the win. He also added 6 rebounds and 4 assists for an all-round effective performance.
Three nights later, he would top Monday’s performance.
On Thursday night, the Tribe returned home for a date against the upstart Elon Phoenix. It was another tightly contested affair, but the Tribe squeaked out the 88-85 win, thanks in part to another big game from Dixon.
He went 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the floor, and 4-of-8 from three point range, for a game-high 32 points. Dixon also pulled down 8 rebounds, dished out 4 assists, and recorded 1 block and 1 steal.
Just another big day for a big-time player.
The Tribe were scheduled to play Saturday afternoon, but due to inclement weather, their game against the Drexel Dragons was postponed.
Over the two games that the Tribe did play over the past seven days, Dixon averaged 28.5 points per contest, to go along with 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists. He shot a combined 21-of-35 (60.0%) from the field, 7-of-16 (43.8%) from three point range, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Dixon is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.6 points per game to go along with 4.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists. All three marks are career-highs for Dixon during his time with the Tribe. He’s also shooting a career-best 46.3% from the floor, and 90.7% from the free throw line.
Alongside Omar Prewitt and Jack Whitman, Dixon has propelled the Tribe into the thick of things in the race for the CAA crown. William & Mary will have their hands full this week, as they go on the road to take on both the UNC Wilmington Seahawks (Thursday) and the College of Charleston Cougars (Saturday).
The Tribe currently sit fifth in the CAA standings, at 2-1 in conference play. A win over either the Seahawks or Cougars will do wonders for the team’s confidence moving forwards. If Dixon keeps up his strong play, they could very well come away with a win or two this week.
Thanks in part to his second 30+ point performance in a span of four games, and averaging 28.5 points per game over two wins last week, senior guard Daniel Dixon was selected by the fans as the College Court Report Fan-Voted Player of the Week for January 2 – 8, 2017!
