CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Per Clay Cunningham of The Courier, Panthers’ star and 2016-17 MVC Preseason Player of the Year Jeremy Morgan is expected to start today versus in-state rival Drake. The 6’5″ guard missed the last game with a sprained right ankle and was seen in a walking boot.
Morgan, one of two seniors on Ben Jacobson’s squad, is leading Northern Iowa in every major offensive category this season. The stat-sheet stuffer is averaging 16.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.5 blocks per contest. He has scored 20 or more points in six games.
Without Morgan, Northern Iowa fell behind early and lost to the young Bradley Braves, 72-61. Not much went right for the Panthers on the night; they shot 33.9% from the field and were out-rebounded 40-26.
Injuries have plagued playmakers from last year’s NCAA Tournament rotation. Sharpshooter Wyatt Lohaus has been inhibited by an ankle injury he suffered at the beginning of the season. The junior has played in six games, averaging 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. As time moves on, a medical redshirt looks like the best option for the guard.
5-11 (0-5) Northern Iowa enters today’s contest losing their last seven. Over the horrific stretch, the Panthers are losing by an average margin of 16.9 points. UNI has not won a game since December 10 when defeating North Dakota.
Opening tip versus Drake is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST. The contest will be streamed on ESPN3, which can be viewed on the ESPN app.
