CALGARY, Alb. — Before Kevin Hervey went down with a season-ending injury last season, the UT-Arlington Mavericks had the look of an NCAA Tournament team. They looked like the top threat to the Little Rock Trojans in the race for the Sun Belt title.
Following his injury, the Mavericks fell off their hot start to the season, and had to settle for a berth in the 2016 CollegeInsider.Com tournament. While a post-season berth is an impressive feat, fans of the Mavericks were left wondering ‘what if’.
The 2016-17 season is in the midst of conference play, and fans are seeing what a healthy Hervey can do against the rest of the Sun Belt.
Entering the week, the Mavericks were second in the conference, trailing only the Georgia Southern Eagles for top spot. They had two tough games on tap, one each at home and on the road, and needed two wins to keep pace atop the Sun Belt.
Behind the play of Hervey, who averaged a double-double for the week, the Mavericks scored two big wins by an average of 26.5 points.
For his efforts this past week, basketball fans selected Kevin Hervey as the College Court Report Fan-Voted Player of the Week for the week of January 23 – 29, 2017!
Hervey missed the Mavericks’ game on January 14th on the road against the Troy Trojans, a game that UT-Arlington would ultimately lose, 92-71. Since his return, the Mavericks won back-to-back games, and were looking to build on their winning streak this past week.
Up first, the Mavericks welcomed the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns to town to close out a mini two-game homestand. The game wasn’t close, as the Mavericks rolled to the 37 point victory over the Ragin’ Cajuns, 108-71.
In just 28 minutes of action, Hervey had himself an effective outing. He finished the game with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks in the win. Hervey went 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the field, and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
Then, on Saturday, Hervey had himself another strong outing, this time on the road against the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
Despite Ronshad Shabazz scoring 33 points for the home side, Hervey and the Mavericks came away with the 83-67 victory over the Mountaineers, extending their winning streak to four games in the process.
Hervey recorded 22 points and 13 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. He finished the game shooting 8-of-15 (53.3%) from the field, and 3-of-4 (75.0%) from three point range in the victory.
For the week, the junior out of Arlington, Texas averaged 21.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game for his hometown program. Hervey shot a combined 16-of-28 (57.1%) from the field, 5-of-10 (50.0%) from three point range, and 6-of-8 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
At 6’9” tall, and 230 pounds, Hervey is a big body in the paint. He can finish around the rim, and battles for rebounds on both ends of the floor. However, on offense, he has the shooting range that allows for him to step out to the three point range and spread out the offense.
He’s the type of player who creates match-up nightmares for his opponents, as they need to be aware of where he is on the floor at all times due to his shooting ability and versatility.
With a healthy Kevin Hervey leading the way with the likes of Erick Neal and others, the Mavericks once again look like an NCAA Tournament team.
For his efforts over the past seven days, the fans selected Kevin Hervey as the College Court Report Fan-Voted Player of the Week for the week of January 23 – 29, 2017!
