CALGARY, Alta. — His nickname is ‘The Dauminator’, and for good reason.
Mike Daum is undoubtedly one of the best players in all of college basketball, and he’s only in his second season with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The nickname fits right into his last name, and he dominates each time he steps foot onto the hardwood.
Ever since his first game as a freshman last year, Daum has been a household name among those in the Summit League. Slowly but surely, he has become a household name on a national level.
This past week was another example of just how dominate the 6’9” sophomore can be. The Jackrabbits came into the week riding a two-game losing streak, but thanks to Daum’s strong play, they got back on the right track.
Over the two wins for South Dakota State, Daum was at the forefront of the offensive attack. He set a season-high mark for the entire NCAA in Saturday’s contest, and has inched ever so close to etching his name into the record books with the Jackrabbits.
For his efforts over the past seven days, Mike Daum has been named the College Court Report Co-Player of the Week for the week of February 13 – 19, 2017!
Coming into the week, Daum had scored 30 or more points in a game on eight occasions this season. At the end of the week, Daum had set the single-game high for the 2016-17 season across the entire NCAA.
Up first, the Jackrabbits returned home for a brief break from the road for a date against the IUPUI Jaguars. It was the second meeting between the two, and South Dakota State was looking to exact some revenge from their overtime loss back in January.
Daum scored 26 points, and the Jackrabbits earned a split in the season series with an 81-67 victory. He also pulled down 9 rebounds, and was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line in the win.
Then, on Saturday, Daum raised the bar for the entire NCAA in terms of scoring.
Against the Fort Wayne Mastodons, Daum set a new season-high in points for anyone in the country in the Jackrabbits’ 97-89 victory. On 14-of-29 shooting from the floor, and 16-of-17 from the free throw line, en route to 51 points.
To top off his strong night, he pulled down 15 rebounds for his eighth double-double performance of the year.
For the week, Daum put up an average of 38.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per contest. He shot a combined 21-of-41 (51.2%) from the field, 7-of-19 (36.8%) from three point range, and 28-of-29 (96.6%) from the free throw line. It was a highly effective week for the sophomore big man from Kimball, NE.
He was impressive as a freshman, but Daum is having an even better year in 2016-17. He is currently second in the country in scoring, averaging 24.8 points per contest. He trails only Marcus Keene (30.2 ppg) for top spot.
Nobody else on the Jackrabbits is averaging over 12 points per contest.
Daum is also averaging 8.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, while shooting 87.4% from the free throw, all of which are career-high marks.
While he hasn’t played two full seasons yet in the NCAA, Daum is living up to the ‘Dauminator’ nickname. He is a threat to go off at any given time, and his versatility makes him dangerous on both ends of the floor. One cannot say enough good things about Daum, his overall game, and his attitude on the hardwood and in life in general.
After Daum-inating IUPUI and Fort Wayne this past week with an average of 38.5 points per game, a stretch that included a 51-point performance, forward Mike Daum has been named the College Court Report Co-Player of the Week for the week of February 13 – 19, 2017!
Daum earned Co-Player of the Week honours alongside Justin Robinson of the Monmouth Hawks.
