Stetson transfer Grant Lozoya commits to Pittsburg State

On Saturday, Grant Lozoya became the third player with Division I experience to transfer to Pittsburg State this off-season.

PITTSBURG, Ks. — While over 750 players have transferred at the Division I level this off-season, there are a high number of players who are transferring to Division II, JUCO, and other levels across the country.

The likes of the Cal Baptist Lancers and Angelo State Rams have left their mark on the transfer market, landing several players with Division I experience to their respective rosters for next season. Players are looking for the best fit for themselves, both in terms of athletics and academics, and the Division I level may not be the ideal spot at the time.

On Saturday, another guard made the move down a level, joining the ranks of Division II for the 2017-18 season.

Grant Lozoya, formerly of the Stetson Hatters, has committed to the Pittsburg State Gorillas in Division II, per Tai Young of Verbal Commits.

Young tweeted the news late on Saturday night.

Prior to transferring, Lozoya played two seasons in DeLand with the Hatters. As a freshman in 2014-15, he averaged 9.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest, while shooting 36.3% from three point range.

As a sophomore in 2015-16, his minutes decreased slightly, and his production dipped with it. Lozoya struggled to find his shooting stroke that he had as a freshman, and shot just 22.9% from beyond the arc. He finished the year with an average of 7.4 points and 1.6 assists per contest.

He did not play this past season due to a foot injury, but he found his way into the headlines for the wrong reason.

In 2016-17, Lozoya ran into some off-court issues that resulted in him being suspended from the team, along with Will Hollmann and Angel Rivera. Lozoya was arrested back in March for shooting a BB gun into an occupied vehicle. He was charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to authorities.

Transferring to Pittsburg State could be what Lozoya needs to get his basketball career back on track. After missing a full season due to injury, it will be interesting to see if Lozoya can regain the form he had as a freshman at Stetson.

Lozoya joins Xavier Adams and Demetrius Levarity on the list of players who have Division I experience and will be a part of the Gorillas next season.
