CANMORE, Alta. — With all of the injuries that the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks have had to endure leading up to the 2017-18 season and through the first two games, they needed someone new to step up and take on a starring role.
Enter freshman guard Cameron Bacote, who has more than risen to the occasion through the Hawks’ first two games of the year.
The 6’3” guard from Hampton, VA came to the Hawks after a stellar career at Bethel High School. He recorded more than 1,000 points over his collegiate career, and averaged 20 points per game during his senior season. Hus AAU team, Team Loaded VA (Richmond), advanced to the Adidas Summer Championship Final Four.
Bacote has a ton of talent on the hardwood, and that was on full display over the Hawks’ first two games of the season. The Hawks earned a split over the weekend, picking up a win over Valley Forge on Friday before falling to the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday night.
In both games, Bacote led the attack for the Hawks, and the fans recognized that on Sunday night and into Monday morning.
For his efforts over his first two games in the NCAA, fans selected Maryland Eastern Shore guard Cameron Bacote as the College Court Report Fan-Voted Freshman of the Week(end) for November 10-12, 2017!
Bacote earned the most votes in our weekly Twitter poll. The other weekly candidates were Zack Bryant (UAB), Kellan Grady (Davidson), and Abayomi Iyiola (Stetson).
For the first time since at least the turn of the Millennium, the Hawks were looking to open their season with a win in their first game. Against Valley Forge on Friday night, the Hawks did just that, holding down home court with a 95-69 victory.
At the forefront of the attack was Bacote, who made a great impression with the home crown in his regular season debut. With injuries to Ryan Andino, Isaac Taylor, and Dontae Caldwell, Bacote took the reigns and led the Hawks with 28 points and 11 assists in the win. He recorded his first career double-double in his first regular season game, while committing just one turnover.
Bacote went 11-for-18 (61.1%) from the floor and 6-for-12 (50%) from three point range on the day, while also pulling down four rebounds. He showed in high school that he had the ability to fill up the score sheet, and he did that in game one with the Hawks.
Then, on Sunday, the Hawks were down another guard, as Logan McIntosh missed the game against the Maryland Terrapins due to an injury suffered against Valley Forge. Bacote led the charge once more for the Hawks, who were overwhelmed in their 96-43 road loss.
Bacote led all scorers in the game once again, posting 18 points on 8-of-17 (47.1%) shooting. He played all 40 minutes against the Terrapins, registering just two personal fouls.
Across his first two games at the Division I level, Bacote is averaging 23.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per contest, while shooting 54.3% (18-for-35) from the floor and 42.1% (8-for-19) from three point range. He may only be two games into his collegiate career, but Bacote has the look of a potential star for the Hawks as his freshman season unfolds.
Looking ahead for the Hawks, they continue their six-game road swing this week. They take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Tuesday, and then the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday. Bacote will look to continue his strong play and help the Hawks pull off a big road win.
For his efforts this past week, the fans selected Maryland Eastern Shore guard Cameron Bacote as the College Court Report Fan-Voted Freshman of the Week(end) for November 10-12, 2017!
