CANMORE, Alta. — It’s safe to say that Justin Turner is looking to make up for lost time with the Bowling Green Falcons in 2017-18.

The redshirt freshman played in just four games a season ago, opting to use his redshirt season after battling an injury for most of the year. Turner did post 10 points and two rebounds on December 30th against the Norfolk State Spartans.

Sitting out a year is never the easiest thing to do, but sometimes it’s the right thing to do.

Now, Turner is healthy and ready to make up for lost time. With key players gone from last season, including Zack Denny and Wes Alcegaire, the Falcons needed someone to step up in 2017-18 alongside Demajeo Wiggins and Dylan Frye to help lead the offense.

After the first game of the season, that player may very well be Turner.

Despite playing just one game over the opening weekend of the 2017-18 season, Turner made a statement in the Falcons’ win over the Drexel Dragons.

After an impressive start to his redshirt freshman season, Bowling Green guard Justin Turner has been named the College Court Report Freshman of the Week(end) for November 10 – 12, 2017!

On Friday, the Falcons opened their 2017-18 season on the road against Drexel. Both teams are looking to replace the production that left from last year’s stars graduating, and it was evenly matched throughout.

Bowling Green came away with the 78-69 victory, and Turner led the way on offense for the visitors.

In 39 minutes of action, Turner scored a game-high 33 points, on 12-of-19 (63.2%) shooting from the floor, and 4-of-7 (57.1%) shooting from three point range. He also added four rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals while committing five turnovers himself.

After the Dragons took an early 7-2 lead, Turner scored five straight points for the Falcons to bring the game back to all-square. Then, in the second half, Turner recorded five points in Bowling Green’s 19-0 run that ultimately shifted the momentum in favour of the Falcons for good.

Nineteen of his points came in the second half. Turner’s 33 points were the most by a Bowling Green freshman since Spencer Park put up 33 at Detroit on December 12th, 2015.

With his impressive season debut now in the rearview mirror, Turner will look to replicate his performance in game two and lead the Falcons to a 2-0 start. Bowling Green will host the South Dakota Coyotes on Monday night in their home opener.

For his efforts on Friday against Drexel, Bowling Green redshirt freshman guard Justin Turner has been named the College Court Report Freshman of the Week(end) for November 10 – 12, 2017!
