CANMORE, Alta. — After finishing in eighth place in the Summit League standings last season, many people were picking against the Western Illinois Leathernecks heading into 2017-18.

In the preseason Summit League poll, they were picked to finish eighth once more. With the departure of the IUPUI Jaguars to the Horizon League, that meant the Leathernecks were projected to finish last. They received 60 points in the poll, whereas the seventh place team received 104.

Based on their start to 2017-18, it’s safe to say that the Leathernecks have used that as motivation early on. Despite the loss of guard Garret Covington, among others, the Leathernecks are 5-2 this season, with a win over the aforementioned Jaguars to boot.

Leading the way is Dalan Ancrum, who is among the nation’s leading scorers with an average of 21.8 points per contest. A player we were high on during the preseason, Brandon Gilbeck, is among the nation’s leading shot blockers once again, averaging 3.2 per game.

However, with Ancrum being a senior, the Leathernecks needed their guard of the future to step up early on in 2017-18. They may have found their next star, in freshman guard Kobe Webster.

The native of Indianapolis, IN opened his collegiate career with a stat line of 19 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and four steals to lead Western Illinois to a season opening win. He sits second on the team in scoring, and has been a big factor in their strong start to the season.

For his efforts this past week, a stretch that saw the Leathernecks split a pair of games to open a four-game home stand, Western Illinois freshman guard Kobe Webster is the College Court Report Freshman of the Week for November 27 – December 3, 2017!

CANMORE, Alta. — It’s no secret that the Oakland Golden Grizzlies are the team to beat in the Horizon League this season, especially with the departure of the Valparaiso Crusaders to the Missouri Valley Conference.

They have one of the more experienced roster in the country, headlined by five seniors. They have a trio of Horizon League Player of the Year contenders, in Jalen HayesKendrick Nunn, and Martez Walker. CANMORE, Alta. — The list of talented freshmen in 2017-18 seems to add a few names each and every week.

Several talents fly under the radar before the season begins, especially at smaller schools across the country. Teams know that they sign talented players from the start, but it takes the rest of the nation a little bit longer to realize their potential.

One of those players is guard Justin Forrest. The native of Decatur, GA is in his first season with the Appalachian State Mountaineers, and has already emerged as a secondary scoring option alongside junior Ronshad Shabazz.

Forrest is currently second on the team in scoring, trailing only Shabazz, and he has a pair of 30+ point performances under his belt early in his collegiate career. While it’s early, all signs point to him being another top-tier weapon for the Mountaineers as they look to climb in the Sun Belt standings this season.

For his efforts this past week, freshman guard Justin Forrest has been selected by the fans as the College Court Report Fan-Voted Freshman of the Week for November 20-26, 2017!

CANMORE, Alta. — With all of the talent that the Rider Broncs have assembled, the future appears to be rather bright in Lawrenceville, NJ.

For starters, there’s star sophomore Stevie Jordan, who seems to flirt with a triple-double whenever the Broncs have a game. Then, there’s sophomore big man Tyere Marshall, who is anchoring the front court.

Add in Rider’s trio of talented freshmen this season, and it’s easy to see why this is a team on the rise. There’s Dimencio Vaughn, who has played well in just three games this season. You’ve got Jordan Allen, who is the team’s leading scorer, averaging a shade under 18 points per game. Lastly, you’ve got forward Frederick Scott, who had himself a solid week for the Broncs, who sit at 5-1 on the season after a perfect 3-0 week.

The 6’8” freshman was looking to help the Broncs build off a win last week over the Hartford Hawks. With three games this past week, Rider had three winnable games, all of which would add momentum to an already strong start.

Over the week, Rider would go onto win all three games, while Scott posted the second double-double of his young career, and added his first 20+ point game the next night out.

For his efforts over the past week, a stretch that saw him almost average a double-double, forward Frederick Scott has been named the College Court Report Freshman of the Week for November 20-26, 2017! Continue reading College Court Report Freshman of the Week: Frederick Scott, Rider Broncs

CANMORE, Alta. — Across the entire NCAA, senior Zach Thomas has been one of the nation’s top players through the first two weeks of the season.

Despite a slow start out of the gate for the Bucknell Bison, who have one of the toughest non-conference slates of any team in the country, Thomas has been a star from game one. He’s been a star over his career with the Bison, but has flown under the radar for the majority of his tenure at Bucknell.

Thomas has averaged double-digit points per game in every year since his sophomore season. He posted 7.5 points per game as a freshman, and has improved with each passing year. This season is no different, as Thomas is on pace for a career year in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and three point shooting through seven games.

Entering the week, the Bison were 0-4. Thomas had a pair of double-doubles to his name, and had recorded at least 17 points in all four games to start the season. With three games on tap this past week, Thomas and the Bison were looking to get back on the right track.

Behind stellar efforts from Thomas, the Bison completed a perfect 3-0 week, and are showing why they were projected as the runaway favourites in the Patriot League this season.

For his efforts this past week, a stretch of three games that saw him post his third double-double of the season and average better than 28 points per game, Bucknell forward Zach Thomas has been named the College Court Report Player of the Week for November 20-26, 2017!
