ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Illinois State sophomore Keyshawn Evans said he liked the rims inside Scottrade Center.

Propelled by 15 points from Evans and a 19-point, 5-rebound, 2-assist performance by senior Deontae Hawkins, the Redbirds (26-5, 17-1) fought off pesky Evansville (16-17, 6-12), 80-69.

Bench production decided the contest. Illinois State outscored Evansville 30-8 in the battle of subs.

Four days of preparation brought improvement.

After three points decided two regular season matchups, Evansville (16-16, 6-12) chopped down the Sycamores (11-20, 5-13), 83-72. A game-high 27 points by senior Jaylon Brown advanced the Purple Aces to a quarterfinal matchup with top-seeded Illinois State.

“Give Indiana State credit,” said Simmons, “They made a lot of big shots, (they) made a run. But, I like the way our guys hung in there, and we were able to finish it off.” Continue reading RECAP: Brown, Gibson propel Evansville past Indiana State, 83-72
