RECAP: Brown, Gibson propel Evansville past Indiana State, 83-72

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Evansville head coach Marty Simmons was blunt: He needed his team to grow before their Arch Madness grudge match versus Indiana State.

We need to improve. We will have to play better than we did today to have a chance.

Four days of preparation brought improvement.

After three points decided two regular season matchups, Evansville (16-16, 6-12) chopped down the Sycamores (11-20, 5-13), 83-72. A game-high 27 points by senior Jaylon Brown advanced the Purple Aces to a quarterfinal matchup with top-seeded Illinois State.

RECAP: Darral Willis Jr., Markis McDuffie lead Wichita State past Indiana State in MVC opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Wichita State may not be ranked, but they are certainly not surprising anyone in the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Shockers, propelled by a combined 47 points from junior Darral Willis Jr. and sophomore Markis McDuffie, weathered a lively Hulman Center crowd to survive, 80-72, against Indiana State. The victory was Wichita State’s 52nd regular season conference win over the last four years.

“There’s a lot of people that doubted us,” said Wichita State junior Zach Brown. “It’s challenging for us, but we’ve got to deal with adversity and get through it. This shows these guys got heart.”
