RECAP: BYU Uses Big First Half to Knock off Northern Iowa

Two teams who people didn’t expect to be in the Consolation Bracket of the Diamond Head Classic were the BYU Cougars and the Northern Iowa Panthers. However, after opening game losses, both teams found themselves aiming for a spot in the 5th-place game on Christmas Day.

In winning their second games of the event, they set themselves up for a fantastic showdown on Christmas Day. With talented guards on both sides of the ball, this was a true Christmas gift to any college basketball fan out there.

Both teams were looking for a quality non-conference win to bolster their tournament resumes, should they find themselves on the bubble come Selection Sunday. The game was close early on, but a 15-0 run for the Cougars in the opening half gave BYU all the momentum they needed.

The 2015-16 college basketball regular season is in full-swing, and what a weekend it was. Upsets were scattered about, mixed in with record-breaking performances from some of the nation’s best programs.

After the first weekend is in the books, basketball fans from across the nation get geared up for a full 24 hours of top-notch college basketball action, in the form of the ESPN 24-Hour Tip-Off Marathon. From Monday, November 16th at 5:30pm until Tuesday, November 17th at 10:00pm, there are basketball games all throughout. Yes, that means even in the wee hours of the morning, there are basketball games (we see you, Nevada and Hawaii).

The event brings together a handful of the country’s best games over that time frame and all of the games are showcased on ESPN networks. To get you ready for this year’s festivities, we have previewed all of the games for you in one convenient location.

The 2015-16 college basketball regular season is finally here! With over 150 games on opening night alone, it has set us up well for another remarkable and memorable season as we march towards the ultimate goal of the NCAA Championship in Houston.

Each day, we will hand out some awards for the top three individual performances from the night before. Opening night saw its fair share of big time individual performances that were critical in the wins for their respective teams.
