College Court Report 2017-18 Preseason Awards: Ohio Valley Conference

Malcolm Drumwright and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks advanced to their first-ever NCAA Tournament last season, and will look to make it back-to-back trips to the Big Dance in 2018.

CANMORE, Alta. — The 2017-18 season tips off on November 10th, which means the final month without college basketball is finally upon us.

Fans all across the country are gearing up for another exciting college basketball season, and with the recent scandal involving the FBI and several power conference programs across the NCAA, the level of anticipation is through the roof.

Conference preview pieces are starting to circulate from various media outlets, and conferences are hosting their annual media days and announcing their preseason polls and award winners. It’s always interesting to see how coaches and media rank teams in their respective conferences.

With the season right around the corner, we are starting to release our Preseason Player of the Year awards for each conference, along with three All-Conference teams. Picked at random, we will release two sets of awards each day.

The race for the Ohio Valley Conference title in 2017-18 will be one of the more exciting ones across the NCAA. Several big names from last season have moved on, while several teams have a legitimate chance to advance to the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

On the heels of their first-ever appearance in the Big Dance last season, momentum has to be behind the Jacksonville State Gamecocks as they look to make it two straight appearances. However, traditional power programs like the Murray State Racers and Belmont Bruins won’t back down easily from the top of the conference.

With a ton of talent in the conference, it’s anyone’s game at this point. Take a look at which talented player we’ve selected as our Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, plus who falls where on our All-OVC teams for the upcoming season!

CHARLESTON, Ill. — The struggle for Eastern Illinois continues.

Despite career performances from Demetrius McReynolds and Muusa Dama, the Panthers fell to Austin Peay, 92-84. The Governors shot 54.2% from the field to complete their second consecutive win.

“It’s getting pretty frustrating,” said McReynolds. “At the beginning of the game, they were making everything. [In] the second half, we tried to pick up our defensive intensity but just couldn’t get no stops.”

As Thursday night against Murray State, the Panthers were ready to play. Eastern Illinois produced points on three of its first four possessions to pull ahead, 7-2. Continue reading RECAP: Demetrius McReynolds, Muusa Dama combine for 48; Eastern Illinois drops second straight

CHARLESTON, Ill. — On February 25, 2016, the Eastern Illinois Panthers welcomed Murray State into Lantz Arena for a nationally televised showdown. 2,000+ fans packed inside the cozy home of the Panthers and were treated to an 85-74 victory, which was by far the most impressive win of the season.

In the Racers’ first trip back, two newcomers, Terrell Miller Jr. and Jonathan Stark, avoided a repeat result, jockeying Murray State to an 83-72 vengeful win.

“When you rely on jumpers, it will come and go,” said Eastern Illinois head coach Jay Spoonhour. “We don’t really have guys that make plays off the bounce real well.

“Our stuff is ending in a jumper. And, jumpers are fickle. They (Murray State) are able to take it and go force you to foul.” Continue reading RECAP: Eastern Illinois squanders 11-point lead, falls to Murray State, 83-72

Sunday’s college basketball slate was quieter than the past couple of days, with only 27 games on tap for the day. However, there were still some big games that could provide teams with a much-needed momentum boost as the season ticks along.

One of those games took place in Chicago, where the Eastern Illinois Panthers took on the UIC Flames.

Both teams came into Sunday with identical 4-3 records on the year, and were looking to push their records further above the .500 mark. The Panthers were coming off a loss to the Bradley Braves, and were looking to get back on the right track, while the Flames were looking to extend their winning streak to a modest two games.

It was back-and-forth early on, and the Flames jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. From there, it was a seesaw game, as both squads traded leads on several occasions.

With 6:42 to play in the opening half, Casey Teson hit a three pointer to give the Panthers a 21-18 lead.

They wouldn’t relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

Eastern Illinois took an 11-point lead into halftime, and the Flames would never get within single digits in the second half. The Panthers rolled to the 90-76 win over UIC on Sunday afternoon. Continue reading RECAP: Cornell Johnston, Eastern Illinois Panthers Roll Past UIC Flames, 90-76
