Steve Vasturia and VJ Beachem: Are They Ready For The Big Leagues?

VJ and Vasturia #2

The 2017 NBA Draft is set to take place Thursday night and two former Notre Dame Fighting Irish standout will look to either hear their name be called out or to sign with a club following the draft.

But if you were to look up some NBA mock drafts, you will find that majority of these predictions leave Steve Vasturia and VJ Beachem out of the draft.

It may be shocking to see these two names off of NBA mock draft lists considering they helped lead Notre Dame to their first conference championship in program history, back to back elite eights, 12 conference wins in 2016 in what some may say is the most challenging conference in the nation and another trip to the ACC conference final.

Vasturia and Beachem even held their own against top prospects like North Carolina’s Justin Jackson, Duke Blue Devil’s Luke Kennard and Florida State Seminoles’ Jonathan Isaac.

So what is the problem then?

RECAP: Notre Dame knocks off #14 Florida State behind Colson’s 33-point game

To the media, Notre Dame’s victory over the Florida State Seminoles may have been an upset, but to the Irish, they know they are one of the elite teams in the ACC regardless of their recent four game losing streak.

Notre Dame knocked off the Seminoles 84-72 behind their electric home crowd, getting the Irish back on track after a rough start to the month of February.

Saturday was a sight for many new things such as Steve Vasturia laying down a monster dunk, Irish basketball fans tailgating in February, Temple (TJ) Gibbs entering the starting lineup and Bonzie Colson entering the 1,000 point club at Notre Dame.

With Mike Brey still struggling to find that key 5th member of his starting line up, the coach decided to go to a four guard starting five, giving the freshman, Temple Gibbs, his first start of his career.

“Playing big guys, that maybe overrated!” said a laughing Coach Mike Brey.

The rising freshman entered Saturday’s game averaging 5.3 points and two assists. Gibbs has had five double digit scoring games this season with his last big performance coming against Duke in which he recorded 12 points. Gibbs also had a big game the last time the Irish faced the Seminoles as he scored 12 points.

Notre Dame lost part one of the two game series between the Seminoles, as the Fighting Irish only lost by three in Tallahassee back in January.

The Irish have since fell out of the AP top 25 after a tough four game losing streak, but looked to seek revenge over the #14 Florida State Seminoles with their home crowd to back them up.

RECAP: Notre Dame Can’t Hang Around With Duke; Extend Losing Streak To Three

vs-duke-2

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish had a tremendous start to their ACC campaign that included big wins against Syracuse, Miami, Pittsburgh, and Louisville.

However, the Irish have run into a little bit of a dry spell, losing their last three games to Virginia, Georgia Tech at the buzzer, and now the Duke Blue Devils.

Notre Dame has to suffered to 6-4 in conference play and have dropped to fifth place in the ACC standings after a long stint in first place. However, with the ACC as deep as it is, the Irish were bound to lose a few games.

In the last few seasons, the Fighting Irish have been victorious in their series with the Blue Devils, winning both games last season, and winning two out of the three games the season before that, including a huge win to advance to the ACC conference championships in which they went on to win for the first time in program history.

Duke currently sits at 6th in the ACC, losing to Virginia Tech, NC State, Louisville, Florida State and an early season two point loss to the Kansas Jaw Hawks. On the other hand, they have destroyed Georgia Tech, beaten a struggling Michigan State team as well as nationally ranked Florida.

One of the nations most scrutinized players, Grayson Allen has been notorious for his unsportsmanlike behaviour on his opponents. The Duke guard is constantly the centre of attention when it comes to college basketball as every game seems to have a new incident of him kicking or knocking down a player. The fans in South Bend experienced it first hand, and Mike Brey was not pleased.

RECAP: Irish Still Can’t Find An Answer For The Cavaliers; Fall To 6-2 In League Play

vs-virginia-1

After ending their losing streak against Syracuse, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish could not end their other drought against the Virginia Cavaliers losing 71-54 at home.

The series between Virginia and Notre Dame may be in the Irish’s favour when it comes to football, but in basketball, the Cavaliers have won the last nine games, with yesterday’s game being number 10.

Before yesterday’s game, the Cavaliers were 9-1 in the all time series, with Notre Dame’s only win coming from the 1980-81 season in which the Irish won 57-56.

Since entering the ACC, Notre Dame has been able to take care of ACC powerhouses like Duke, Syracuse and North Carolina, but have struggled immensely against Virginia.

Yesterday’s loss against the Virginia Cavaliers has taken a hit to the Irish’s position in the ACC standings. Notre Dame and Virginia are now tied for second with North Carolina and Florida State sharing the number one spot.

Notre Dame suffered their first conference loss of the season last night to the top 10 Florida State Seminoles 83-80 but still remain atop the ACC.

The Irish are now 5-1 in ACC play and 16-3 overall despite going 15 for 21 from the three point line; that’s 71.4% in case you prefer percents. They shot better from beyond the arc than the field (46.6%) and were slightly shy from passing their free throw percentage. However regardless of the mesmerizing shooting efforts, Florida State took care of the Irish defensively.

“I think you got to give Florida State a lot of credit”, coach Mike Brey commented following the game, “Their defence bothered us, we turned it over a bunch but they’re athletic and they’re fresh and they move you around”.

Florida State is one of the nations up and coming teams ready to make some noise in March and their performance indicated they are ready to compete in the ACC with the traditional powerhouses.

“The teams that maybe struggled in previous years really at the bottom of the league, they’re much improved and so this is the recipe for 10 bids, 11 bids” stated coach Brey.

The Seminoles have only lost two games this season, one against the Temple Owls at the beginning of the season and another to the #11 North Carolina Tar Heels (now #9) while beating the #21 Florida Gators (now #19), the #12 Virginia Cavaliers (now #16), the #7 Duke Blue Devils (now#18) and now yesterday against the #15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

This was the Irish’s last game before returning home after a three game road series that included Miami, Virginia Tech and now Florida State. The Irish pulled off big wins in both Miami and in Blacksburg, Virginia and were hoping to return home 6-0 in ACC play.

With their win over Virginia Tech and Florida State’s recent loss to North Carolina, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are now officially first place in the ACC as they improved to 5-0 on the season after a five point win against the Hokies.

Virginia Tech was nationally ranked a few weeks ago after defeating #5 (at the time) Duke, but fell out of the AP Top 25 as a result of two straight losses to North Carolina State and Florida State.

The Hokies are now 13-4 on the season after today’s loss to the Fighting Irish, but have won against prominent basketball opponents in Michigan, Texas A & M, Duke and Syracuse.

Before today’s game, Notre Dame and the Hokies had played against each other seven times with the Irish now leading the series 7-1. The Irish won last years matchup between the Hokies, winning by only two points at home. Virginia Tech hasn’t won against the Irish since the 1973 NIT Championship game.
