GREENSBORO, NC. — With our Game of the Day picks, we have decided to steer clear from the traditional power five match-ups, or the obvious selections that would feature a pair of top 25 teams.

Instead, we want to focus on intriguing games between smaller schools from across the country. On Saturday, fans get treated to a Southern Conference opener that features a pair of teams that have wins over ACC teams from the state of North Carolina this season in non-conference play.

On one side, you have the Wofford Terriers. All eyes were on the Terriers on December 20th, when they knocked off the then-fifth ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, NC. Wofford never trailed in the second half, and held on down the stretch for the 79-75 victory. They come in having won their last five contests, and will look to extend their streak to six when they open conference play.

Their opponent on Saturday also knows a ting or two about road upsets. The UNC Greensboro Spartans have an 81-76 win over the NC State Wolfpack on their resume from December 16th, and lost by just six points against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. With five wins over their past six games, the Spartans have emerged as a legitimate threat in the race for the Southern Conference title, much like the Terriers.

Here’s what you need to know in advance of Saturday’s showdown between Wofford and UNC Greensboro, which takes place at 5:00pm EST inside the Greensboro Coliseum. Continue reading December 30th Game of the Day: Wofford Terriers at UNC Greensboro Spartans

UNC Greensboro Tops Liberty in Triple Overtime Thriller, 76-75

Francis Alonso scored a career-high 36 points on Saturday, and he hit the game-winning three pointer in triple overtime to give UNC Greensboro the 76-75 win over Liberty.

LYNCHBURG, VA. — Big time players hit big time shots.

Junior guard Francis Alonso is a big time player. On Saturday afternoon, Alonso hit big shot after big shot for the UNC Greensboro Spartans, who were in a dog fight on the road against the Liberty Flames.

Liberty held an 11-point lead with under five minutes to play, but the Spartans launched a comeback, one that saw Alonso hit a clutch shot in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime. They needed three overtime periods, but Alonso made sure that UNCG was the team that came out on top when all was said and done.

Alonso recorded a career-high 36 points, but none were bigger than his game-winning three pointer in the third overtime with 2.4 seconds left on the clock. The Spartans clawed back in regulation to force extra time, and came away with the hard-fought 76-75 win over Liberty on Saturday afternoon. CALGARY, Alta. — The 2017-18 season is just around the corner, and while there’s a debate on Twitter as to when the season actually starts, it can’t get here soon enough.

Schedules are being released with each passing weekday, and many of them feature early-season tournaments and multi-team events all throughout non-conference play. According to Chris Dobbertean and Blogging the Bracket, there are over 30 multi-team tournaments, and another handful of neutral site showcases and non-exempt events.

So, with the season coming up, we thought we would go through and preview all of the early-season tournaments, the non-exempt tournaments, and a wide array of the neutral site showcase events. In total, we will preview 75 different events over the course of the next 75 days, culminating on opening day.

We selected the events at random, and have broken some up into two pieces, like the Phil Knight Invitational, since there are two separate brackets.

Today, we take a look at the field for the 2017 UNC Greensboro MTE.
