CANMORE, Alta. — Based on how the 2017-18 season has started, the future looks bright for the Duquesne Dukes.

The Dukes have one of the top young duos in the Atlantic 10 Conference, in sophomore guard Mike Lewis II and freshman guard Eric Williams Jr. Both players rank one and two, respectively, in terms of scoring leaders for the Dukes through eight games, while Williams is the team’s leading rebounder.

This past week, Williams continued his strong play to open up his collegiate career with the Dukes. While Duquesne came into the week riding a three game losing streak, their fortunes quickly took a turn for the better.

When the week was all said and done, the Dukes had a three game winning streak, and the play of Williams was a big reason for their successful week.

The native of New Haven, MI came into the week with two double-double performances to his name. Over the last three games, he doubled his season total, posting another pair of double-doubles while helping the Dukes to three wins over the past seven days.

For his efforts this past week, a stretch of games that saw him average a double-double, Duquesne freshman Eric Williams Jr. has been named the College Court Report Freshman of the Week for December 4 – 10, 2017!

College Court Report Freshman of the Week: Kobe Webster, Western Illinois Leathernecks

Freshman guard Kobe Webster is emerging as a star for Western Illinois in 2017-18. (Source: Western Courier)

CANMORE, Alta. — After finishing in eighth place in the Summit League standings last season, many people were picking against the Western Illinois Leathernecks heading into 2017-18.

In the preseason Summit League poll, they were picked to finish eighth once more. With the departure of the IUPUI Jaguars to the Horizon League, that meant the Leathernecks were projected to finish last. They received 60 points in the poll, whereas the seventh place team received 104.

Based on their start to 2017-18, it’s safe to say that the Leathernecks have used that as motivation early on. Despite the loss of guard Garret Covington, among others, the Leathernecks are 5-2 this season, with a win over the aforementioned Jaguars to boot.

Leading the way is Dalan Ancrum, who is among the nation’s leading scorers with an average of 21.8 points per contest. A player we were high on during the preseason, Brandon Gilbeck, is among the nation’s leading shot blockers once again, averaging 3.2 per game.

However, with Ancrum being a senior, the Leathernecks needed their guard of the future to step up early on in 2017-18. They may have found their next star, in freshman guard Kobe Webster.

The native of Indianapolis, IN opened his collegiate career with a stat line of 19 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and four steals to lead Western Illinois to a season opening win. He sits second on the team in scoring, and has been a big factor in their strong start to the season.

For his efforts this past week, a stretch that saw the Leathernecks split a pair of games to open a four-game home stand, Western Illinois freshman guard Kobe Webster is the College Court Report Freshman of the Week for November 27 – December 3, 2017!

CANMORE, Alta. — With all of the talent that the Rider Broncs have assembled, the future appears to be rather bright in Lawrenceville, NJ.

For starters, there’s star sophomore Stevie Jordan, who seems to flirt with a triple-double whenever the Broncs have a game. Then, there’s sophomore big man Tyere Marshall, who is anchoring the front court.

Add in Rider’s trio of talented freshmen this season, and it’s easy to see why this is a team on the rise. There’s Dimencio Vaughn, who has played well in just three games this season. You’ve got Jordan Allen, who is the team’s leading scorer, averaging a shade under 18 points per game. Lastly, you’ve got forward Frederick Scott, who had himself a solid week for the Broncs, who sit at 5-1 on the season after a perfect 3-0 week.

The 6’8” freshman was looking to help the Broncs build off a win last week over the Hartford Hawks. With three games this past week, Rider had three winnable games, all of which would add momentum to an already strong start.

Over the week, Rider would go onto win all three games, while Scott posted the second double-double of his young career, and added his first 20+ point game the next night out.

For his efforts over the past week, a stretch that saw him almost average a double-double, forward Frederick Scott has been named the College Court Report Freshman of the Week for November 20-26, 2017! Continue reading College Court Report Freshman of the Week: Frederick Scott, Rider Broncs

CANMORE, Alta. — Coming into the 2017-18 season, it was common knowledge that the Eastern Kentucky Colonels had one of the more underrated tandems in the nation.

Junior forward Nick Mayo and sophomore guard Asante Gist were expected to lead the Colonels on their quest for an Ohio Valley Conference title this season. However, Gist has only played one game this season, a three-point performance in the season opener against the Rice Owls.

With Gist out of the lineup, the Colonels needed someone to step up and compliment Mayo on both ends of the floor. Enter freshman combo guard Dedric Boyd, who has been a big factor in all three games so far this season for the Colonels.

After clinching the win for the Colonels over the Owls with timely free throws, Boyd picked up where he left off over the past seven days. Eastern Kentucky earned a split over their two games this past week, and Boyd was at the forefront on both nights.

For his efforts over the past week, helping Eastern Kentucky notch a win in their home opener and for pushing a team from the SEC to the brink on the road, Colonels’ guard Dedric Boyd has been selected as the College Court Report Freshman of the Week for the week of November 13 – 19, 2017!

College Court Report Freshman of the Week: Justin Turner, Bowling Green Falcons

Justin Turner posted 33 points, seven assists, and four rebounds in his 2017-18 debut, leading Bowling Green to a win over Drexel. (Source: Bowling Green Athletics)

CANMORE, Alta. — It’s safe to say that Justin Turner is looking to make up for lost time with the Bowling Green Falcons in 2017-18.

The redshirt freshman played in just four games a season ago, opting to use his redshirt season after battling an injury for most of the year. Turner did post 10 points and two rebounds on December 30th against the Norfolk State Spartans.

Sitting out a year is never the easiest thing to do, but sometimes it’s the right thing to do.

Now, Turner is healthy and ready to make up for lost time. With key players gone from last season, including Zack Denny and Wes Alcegaire, the Falcons needed someone to step up in 2017-18 alongside Demajeo Wiggins and Dylan Frye to help lead the offense.

After the first game of the season, that player may very well be Turner.

Despite playing just one game over the opening weekend of the 2017-18 season, Turner made a statement in the Falcons’ win over the Drexel Dragons.

After an impressive start to his redshirt freshman season, Bowling Green guard Justin Turner has been named the College Court Report Freshman of the Week(end) for November 10 – 12, 2017! Continue reading College Court Report Freshman of the Week: Justin Turner, Bowling Green Falcons
