SOUTH BEND, IN. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish opened their three game preseason slate against neighbour Holy Cross College Saints, notching a 97-57 victory on Friday night.

While Friday’s victory was a predictable result for the 2017-2018 Irish, it was a good way to get back into the routine of playing games and a chance to work out the kinks before the regular season.

But the win against Holy Cross wasn’t the only victory Notre Dame achieved. The main reason why a third preseason game was scheduled was to support hurricane relief efforts, with all proceeds going towards helping though’s affected in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands from the various natural disasters that took place over the summer months.

Heading into the 2017-18 season, that appears to be the case once again. While some of the conference’s biggest names have moved on to the next chapters of their respective basketball careers, whether that be in the professional ranks or as a transfer in the NCAA, there is a plethora of talent coming back that will make the race for the conference title one to watch.

There may be a clear-cut favourite as the season approaches, but it’s anyone’s game when it comes down to the conference tournament. Any team can get hot at the right time, pull of some upsets, and make a post-season run to the Big Dance.

Patriot League Power Rankings: Navy Midshipmen make some noise

Cedric Hankerson and the Boston University Terriers are the only unbeaten team in Patriot League play, but are they the top team in our Power Rankings?
Cedric Hankerson and the Boston University Terriers are the only unbeaten team in Patriot League play, but are they the top team in our Power Rankings?

It was a relatively quiet week in the Patriot League, but there was still a bit of movement across the board.

While the top three teams remained the same, we have a new top-ranked team in the conference power rankings. The top two teams are set to square off this coming Saturday, which will only lead to some more movement next week, and beyond.

The conference itself seems to be in for an exciting race come March, as anyone can turn it on at any given time and make a run up the standings. We saw that this past week, as one team jumped up four spots and into the top five of the power rankings.

Here’s this week’s edition of the Patriot League Power Rankings, with a new top dog in the conference.

The New Year is already over a week old, and conference play is in full swing all across the country. We’ve seen our fair share of great games so far in 2017, and the frequency will only increase as the season moves closer to the NCAA Tournament in mid-March.

One conference, in particular, that has provided some exciting basketball over the first two weeks of conference play is the Patriot League. On opening night, four of the five road teams scored victories to open things up, while plenty of the games have been single-digit margins of victory.

Team rosters are decorated with star players, and there’s a ton of talent on display each and every night. While the usual suspects are either at, or near, the top of the standings after four games, the conference seems as though it could go any which way. As of Sunday night, all ten teams in the conference have at least one win in Patriot League play.

Based on the fact that the conference race could go several different directions, we felt as though it was time to see how the teams stack up.

Below, you can find the inaugural edition of the College Court Report Patriot League Power Rankings, to be released each Monday from now to the end of the year.

March isn’t even a week old in 2016, and the college basketball world has experienced its fair share of madness already. One day after the Austin Peay Governors secured their place in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Ohio Valley Conference as an 8-seed, the college basketball world may be witnessing the next Cinderella team.

The Holy Cross Crusaders.

Coming into the Patriot League tournament, the Crusaders were the 9-seed after finishing the regular season with a 5-13 conference record. They took down the Loyola (MD) Greyhounds in the opening round, then upset the top-seeded Bucknell Bison in the quarter-finals.

With the win over Bucknell, the Crusaders were off to the semi-finals to take on the Army West Point Black Knights. After struggling early on in conference play, Army is finally healthy and has started to play some strong basketball when it matters most.

Army came out flat, and the Crusaders took full advantage. Playing on the road didn’t intimidate Holy Cross in the slightest, and they led from start to finish on the afternoon.

The Holy Cross Crusaders are off to the Patriot League championship game after their 60-38 win over the Army West Point Black Knights. Continue reading RECAP: Holy Cross Routs Army West Point to Secure Spot in Patriot League Championship
