RECAP: Jeremy Morgan’s return fuels Northern Iowa Panthers to first MVC victory

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The difference one man makes.

Wednesday night at Bradley, Northern Iowa Panthers senior Jeremy Morgan was inactive. The guard’s right foot was in a walking boot due to an ankle sprain.

Four days later, the 2016-17 Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Player of the Year was back on the court for a rivalry game against Drake.

For the first time since December 10, UNI fought to a victory.

Northern Iowa, shooting 63% in the first half, immediately jumped on Drake and put the Bulldogs in their pen, 79-60. Jeremy Morgan’s presence was felt with a 21-point, 4-rebound, 3-assist performance while Bennett Koch was perfect from the floor and scored 21 points. Northern Iowa star Jeremy Morgan expected to return from ankle injury, start Sunday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Per Clay Cunningham of The Courier, Panthers’ star and 2016-17 MVC Preseason Player of the Year Jeremy Morgan is expected to start today versus in-state rival Drake. The 6’5″ guard missed the last game with a sprained right ankle and was seen in a walking boot.

Morgan, one of two seniors on Ben Jacobson’s squad, is leading Northern Iowa in every major offensive category this season. The stat-sheet stuffer is averaging 16.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.5 blocks per contest. He has scored 20 or more points in six games. RECAP: Missouri State begins MVC play victorious, holds off Northern Iowa, 68-63

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — 1 down, 17 to go.

In a game they led from start to finish, Missouri State fended off Northern Iowa, 68-63. Star senior Dequon Miller scored a team-high 17 points in the win while sophomore Ryan Kreklow iced the contest with four free throws.

“It’s huge,” said Kreklow about the win to Jim Connell of Springfield News-Leader. “1-0 in ‘The Valley’ so far — We’ve got a long way to go, but I think it shows that we’re growing a lot as a team.”

Missouri State dominated the Panthers in the first half. 2015-16 Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year Dequon Miller started the party with the game’s first five points.
