ABILENE, Tex. — The standings in the Southland Conference through the first half of league play are a log jam, as eight teams came into Wednesday night with a record above .500 against conference opponents.

On Wednesday night, two teams with 5-4 records looked to separate themselves from the pack a bit. The Abilene Christian Wildcats welcomed the Lamar Cardinals to town in the only meeting of the season between the two programs. Last season, they only met once, and the Wildcats picked up a home win thanks to a buzzer-beating three pointer from Payten Ricks from half court.

While there weren’t any late-game heroics this time around, the end result was still the same. Abilene Christian and Lamar went back and forth for much of the first half before the home side took a four point lead into the break.

The Wildcats led for most of the second frame, and picked up their sixth conference win of the season with a 74-69 victory over the Cardinals. Continue reading Jalone Friday Posts Double-Double in 74-69 Win For Abilene Christian Over Lamar

ABILENE, Tex. — The Southland Conference standings are almost as congested as the subways in Toronto, ON during the morning rush hour on a Tuesday.

Coming into Wednesday night’s action, the teams in first place and 10th place are separated by just four games. Nine teams in the league have a record of at least .500 against conference foes, adding some drama to the second half of league play as the calendars prepare to be flipped to February.

Right in the middle of the log jam are the Abilene Christian Wildcats and Lamar Cardinals. Both teams enter their tilt on Wednesday night with identical 13-9 records overall, and 5-4 records in conference play. Both teams are looking to pick up a win and separate themselves from the pack and make a move up in the standings.

With only eight teams making the Southland Conference tournament in Katy, TX, each and every game is significant.

Here’s what you need to know in advance of the only regular season meeting of the 2017-18 season between Abilene Christian and Lamar.

NEW ORLEANS — I’ll be the first to admit that I underestimated the New Orleans Privateers heading into Wednesday night’s match-up with the Lamar Cardinals.

All the Privateers did on Wednesday night was open the game on a 13-2 run and never trail over the course of the entire game. New Orleans never let Lamar get settled into a rhythm, forcing them to play catch-up all night long.

New Orleans had four different players score in double-figures, led by Makur Puou, who had a team-high 14 points. The Privateers held the Cardinals to just 16 points in the first half, and wouldn’t let Lamar get closer than four points in the second frame.

After not recording a win over a Division I opponent in non-conference play, the Privateers have now won three straight games to open Southland play. New Orleans led wire-to-wire in their 72-62 win over Lamar inside the Lakefront Arena. Continue reading New Orleans Remains Perfect in Southland Play With 72-62 Win Over Lamar

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Wednesday night pits two teams who are 2-0 in Southland Conference play against one another in an early match-up for first place in the conference.

Five teams in total have 2-0 records in conference play, with two of them having records that are below .500 overall for the season. One of those two teams, the New Orleans Privateers, will look to move to 3-0 when they host the Lamar Cardinals in the Big Easy on Wednesday night.

Lamar was projected to be a top contender in the conference in various preseason polls, and they’ve lived up to the billing early on this season. At 10-5 overall, they have the second-best record of any team in the Southland Conference.

As for the Privateers, they were expected to take a step back this season. Instead, they’ve knocked off a pair of talented teams to open conference play on a two game winning streak. Wednesday night will be a big test for both teams, as they look to extend their winning streaks to three games and score their first win of the 2018 calendar year.

Here’s what you need to know in advance of Wednesday’s battle for first place between Lamar and New Orleans. Continue reading Lamar Basketball: Previewing the New Orleans Privateers

BEAUMONT, Tex. — On Saturday, less than 24 hours after welcoming his second son into the world, senior forward Colton Weisbrod was back on the hardwood and leading the Lamar Cardinals to their eighth win of the season.

In front of their home crowd, the Cardinals took on the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets in non-conference play. Lamar came into the day riding a four-game winning streak, and were looking to extend it before heading out on the road for a pair of games this week.

Weisbrod was one of six Cardinals to score in double-figures on the night, and all 11 players who saw action for Lamar scored at least three points for the home side.

For the third time this season, Lamar topped the century mark on the scoreboard. The Cardinals doubled up the Yellow Jackets, 112-56, to extend their winning streak to five games. Continue reading Lamar Cardinals Double Up Howard Payne, 112-56, for Fifth Straight Win

SAN MARCOS, Tex. — Instate battles in the regular season are always exciting.

When they take place in the post-season, and the stakes are much, much higher, they get taken to another level.

On Thursday night down in San Marcos, Texas, the CIT provided an all-Texas battle in the first round. The Lamar Cardinals, who were making their first appearance in the post-season since 2012, went on the road to take on the Texas State Bobcats, who fell in the Sun Belt tournament finale over the weekend.

While it’s not considered an instate rivalry by any means, having bragging rights over a team in your same state is never a bad thing.

On their home court, the Bobcats came out with a strong first half, setting the tone towards the end of the frame. An 11-1 run by the Bobcats gave them a nine-point lead, which would expand to a 12-point lead at the break.

The second half saw Lamar try to cut into the lead and get back into the game, but Texas State always had an answer for what the Cardinals threw at them.

Texas State kept their opponents at a safe distance, and punched their ticket to the Second Round of the CIT with a 70-60 win over Lamar. Continue reading RECAP: Texas State tops Lamar in an all-Texas showdown, 70-60
