PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Fans of the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks were left wondering ‘what could’ve been’ following the 2017-18 season.

From the outset of the season, the Hawks were riddled with injuries to their key players. The trio of Ryan Andino, Dontae Caldwell, and Isaac Taylor all missed the season due to various injuries. The Hawks were forced to turn to their freshmen and walk-ons from the start of the season, and while they were competitive in some games, they were ultimately out-matched on both ends of the floor.

When all was said and done, the Hawks finished with a record of 7-25 overall, and just 3-13 in conference play. Eastern Shore finished 12th in the MEAC during the regular season, and fell in the First Round of the MEAC Tournament to the Norfolk State Spartans.

Following the dismal season, the Hawks have started to make some significant changes. That started with the head coaching position, as the school announced that it would not be renewing the contract of head coach Bobby Collins, who was the head coach of the Hawks for the past four seasons. LYNCHBURG, Va. — The NCAA Tournament doesn’t get underway until Tuesday night with a pair of First Four games in Dayton, but post-season basketball took place on Monday afternoon and evening.

At 12:00pm EST, the 10th edition of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament got underway in Fort Wayne, IN. Four games were scheduled for Monday in the First Round of the 20-team event, all featuring schools from outside of the power conferences.

In Lynchburg, VA, the Liberty Flames played host to the North Carolina A&T Aggies to kick off the post-season for both teams. Equipped with identical 20-14 records, both teams were looking to pick up a win and advance into the second round of the tournament next week.

All season, the Flames have had one of the nation’s top scoring defenses, and they made things extremely tough for the Aggies on Monday night. Liberty held North Carolina A&T to their lowest offensive output of the season, and rolled to the 65-52 win over the Aggies in the Jim Phelan Classic. LYNCHBURG, Va. — The 2017-18 season is extended for at least one more game for a pair of teams who put together impressive runs during the regular season and conference tournaments.

Monday marks the start of postseason tournament basketball across the NCAA, as the 10th anniversary of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) will begin play with a slew of games across the country. Programs from outside of the power conferences who weren’t selected for the NCAA Tournament or the NIT make up the field and will vie for the tournament title.

Earlier this week, the Liberty Flames accepted an invitation into the 2018 CIT, and they learned who their first opponent would be on Saturday. The Flames will welcome the North Carolina A&T Aggies to Lynchburg, VA on Monday night, with tip-off scheduled for 6:00pm EST.

The game is an intriguing match-up, and both teams are coming off of lengthy runs in their conference tournaments. PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — With the conference title long out of the picture, Monday night’s contest is for pride.

The Delaware State Hornets visit the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks in the only meeting of the 2017-18 season between the two schools, and both will be looking for a win to avoid the last-place spot. Monday marks the final game for the Hawks in the regular season, and a win would keep them out of the final spot.

As for the Hornets, who enter the day in 13th place of the 13-team league, they are hoping to pick up a win that would move them into a tie with the Hawks for 12th. The win would give Delaware State the 12th spot in the field, keeping them out of a solo last-place finish.

Nobody wants to finish in last place in the regular season standings, which is why both teams will bring their best on Monday night inside the Hytche Athletic Center. The Hawks will be honouring their seniors, and will want to send the pair of Logan McIntosh and Najee Fitzgerald off with a win.

Here’s what you need to know in advance of Monday night’s MEAC battle between Delaware State and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Charles Williams had himself a stellar freshman campaign in 2016-17 for the Howard Bison, and he hasn’t slowed down in year two.

Add in the play of freshman RJ Cole in 2017-18, and the Bison have arguably the best young tandem in the MEAC, and one that could rival the top pairs from other conferences around the country. When Howard welcomed the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks to town on Monday night, the pair were at their best as the Bison looked for the regular season series sweep of the Hawks.

Back in January, the Bison picked up an 85-75 win over the Hawks in Princess Anne, MD, behind 28 points from Cole.

On Monday, it was the same result for Howard, but by a much larger margin. The Bison used three big runs in the first half to take a 44-16 at the break, and they would go onto win by that same margin of 28 points. Howard cruised to the 84-56 win over Eastern Shore to complete the regular season sweep. Continue reading Howard Routs Maryland-Eastern Shore by 28 Behind Williams, Cole

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — What a difference a year makes in the MEAC standings.

Last season, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats finished 10th in the league with a record of 6-10, while the North Carolina A&T Aggies finished in last place at 1-15. Both were projected to be towards the bottom of the standings in the preseason polls for the 2017-18 season, but they have managed to flip the script.

The Aggies (8-2) and Wildcats (7-3) sit second and third in the league standings in advance of Monday’s action, respectively, and will be looking to keep pace atop the league standings.

On the flip side, the North Carolina Central Eagles find themselves in some unfamiliar territory through 10 league games, as they sit in a tie for fifth spot at 6-4. After winning the tournament title a season ago, they are looking to return to the Big Dance.

Monday night pits the Wildcats and Eagles against one another for the only regular season meeting between the two programs in 2017-18. Both teams are looking to catch the Savannah State Tigers atop the conference standings, and while that’s no easy feat, a win for either program on Monday will go a long way as they continue the stretch run.

Here’s what you need to know in advance of Monday’s top-five MEAC showdown between Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina Central. Continue reading Bethune-Cookman Hosts North Carolina Central in Top-Five MEAC Showdown
