Steve Vasturia and VJ Beachem: Are They Ready For The Big Leagues?

VJ and Vasturia #2

The 2017 NBA Draft is set to take place Thursday night and two former Notre Dame Fighting Irish standout will look to either hear their name be called out or to sign with a club following the draft.

But if you were to look up some NBA mock drafts, you will find that majority of these predictions leave Steve Vasturia and VJ Beachem out of the draft.

It may be shocking to see these two names off of NBA mock draft lists considering they helped lead Notre Dame to their first conference championship in program history, back to back elite eights, 12 conference wins in 2016 in what some may say is the most challenging conference in the nation and another trip to the ACC conference final.

Vasturia and Beachem even held their own against top prospects like North Carolina’s Justin Jackson, Duke Blue Devil’s Luke Kennard and Florida State Seminoles’ Jonathan Isaac.

So what is the problem then?

In honour of draft season being upon us, we are going to do something that we don’t normally like doing: an NBA mock draft.

We don’t like doing them for several reasons, but it’s also somewhat fun to do at the same time. It allows us to consider what teams need at the NBA level, and try to play the role of matchmaker for the time being. We try to fix their problems without them knowing.

The 2015 NBA Draft class will be packed with talent from the first overall selection to the 60th pick. There is a plethora of talented players this season, and there will be some immensely talented players who do not hear their name called. They will have to turn their attention to the summer leagues if they want to make their NBA dreams a reality.

On Tuesday night, starting at 7:30pm EST, we will be holding our weekly podcast through RabbleTV! That is where we will release our selections for our 2015 NBA Mock Draft.

Tune in at 7:30pm and follow along with our selections over the course of the hour and a half, leading up to Game 3 of the NBA Finals! We’ll also break down five second-round selections in the talk. Continue reading 2015 NBA Mock Draft

The NBA Draft Lottery is less than a week away, which means that the NBA Draft itself is quickly approaching.

Over the course of the week, the NBA Draft Combine has been taking place in Chicago, IL. An extensive list of NBA-hopefuls have been going through various tests and skill challenges as they look to make an impression with an NBA team.

One of the best ways to see a player’s on-court talent is on the court in 5-on-5 games. This allows scouts and executives to see how different players stack up against top-tier NCAA competition, and get a first-hand look at how they perform in games.

On Thursday, the NBA Draft Combine will see four teams of 9 players take part in 5-on-5 games over the course of the day.

Below, you can find the lineups of all four teams. From top to bottom, all of the teams are decorated with talented players looking to leave their mark in the minds of NBA scouts and executives. The goal is to hear their name called on draft day, and this event is the perfect may to better one’s chances. Continue reading NBA Draft Combine: 5-on-5 Lineups

Seven Round NBA Mock Draft

The NBA has the shortest draft out of the four major professional sport leagues, so we thought we'd see what it'd look like to do a seven-round, NCAA-only, NBA mock draft for fun.
The NBA has the shortest draft out of the four major professional sport leagues, so we thought we’d see what it’d look like to do a seven-round, NCAA-only, NBA mock draft for fun.

Draft time is always the best time for fans of any professional sport, and the NBA is no different. As a Canadian, the past two NBA drafts have been especially exciting, as Wiggins and Bennett have gone #1 in back-to-back years.

With the NBA having small rosters, the draft is only two rounds long. You look at the NHL and the NFL, and they have seven round. Then, there’s the MLB, whose draft seems to go on forever. With that being said, we thought it would be fun to change up the NBA draft process.

What would it look like if the NBA had a seven round draft?

Because we have nothing better to do with our time, we decided to take a look and find out! We have put together a seven-round NBA draft, just for fun, to see what it would look like. When we did it, we factored in a few different rules/guidelines for the draft order and the players eligible for said draft.

Guidelines:

– We used the draft order from a mock draft done by USA Today for the first two rounds, and then did rounds 3-7 based on the final regular season standings for the teams.

– Players in the draft fit into the following FOUR categories:
– NCAA players ONLY (no international players for this draft)
– Early entry players are included in the draft (list can be found here)
– Players who were SENIORS in 2014-15
– Players who are transferring AND graduating this season, according to ESPN’s list of transfers

Again, this draft is strictly for fun. We wanted to see where some talented mid-major players would land if the draft was expanded. We took into account team needs in the NBA, so that will influence some of the picks.

The draft will be released over the course of the next couple of days, so be sure to check back as the week goes on!
