Monday’s in the MEAC: Norfolk State releases their full schedule, inter-conference rivalries, and more

Zaynah Robinson and the Norfolk State Spartans will open the 2017-18 season on the road against the Auburn Tigers.

CALGARY, Alta. — Another week has quickly come and gone, which means opening day for the 2017-18 season is just over three months away.

November 10th cannot come soon enough, as we feel that we have waited long enough for college basketball to come back into our lives. Several teams are embarking on international exhibition tours, which gives us a small sample of college basketball in early August.

This past week, we had a bit more action in and around the MEAC. We saw our first full schedule released from the conference for the 2017-18 season, which provided some more insight into the MEAC pairings for other teams in the conference.

One team picked up a late commitment from a class of 2017 point guard to bolster their back court rotation, and we took a Twitter question and gave our own take on it.

Here’s what you may have missed from the last seven days in the MEAC.

Mondays in the MEAC: Preseason Player of the Year power rankings

In 2016-17, his first season with Bethune-Cookman, Brandon Tabb averaged a team-high 17.8 points per contest.

CALGARY, Alta. — Mondays are usually the least exciting day of the week, but we’re setting out to change that.

At College Court Report, Mondays are now all about the MEAC. Each week, we will release our ‘Mondays in the MEAC’ feature article, which will feature the happenings from the previous seven days in the conference.

From news and game recaps, to player and team profiles, we will keep you updated with what is happening for all 13 teams.

This week, the feature debuts, and we decided to look at who has the best chance to take home the Player of the Year award at year’s end.

On Sunday, we released a poll that asked fans who they thought would take home the award. We were flooded with write-in votes for players all across the conference, but the votes winner may come as a bit of a surprise to some.

Here’s the first edition of the MEAC Player of the Year Power Rankings. Several stat stuffers from last season are on the list, with the conference’s reigning leading scorer atop the list to kick things off.

Home court advantage paying off early in the 2017 CIT

CALGARY, Alta. — Home court, or home field, advantage in the post-season is a huge advantage in any sport.

Whether it’s hockey, baseball, basketball, or football, among others, playing at home in the playoffs is much easier than having to win on the road in front of a slew of opposing fans.

Through four games of the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT, that has become very clear.

After Tuesday’s contests, home teams are a combined 3-1 so far in the first round. Two of the three wins came by sizable margins (nine and 19 points), while the one loss by a home team was decided by just two points.

While this trend bodes well for the rest of the home teams in the remaining games in the opening round, the luck hasn’t always been on the side of the hosts. Continue reading Home court advantage paying off early in the 2017 CIT

2017 CIT opens up with the second annual John McLendon Classic

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Post-season basketball is back!

On Sunday night, the fields were released for the four post-season tournaments that will take place over the next four weeks. The 68 teams who are participating in the NCAA Tournament were released first, followed by the fields for the NIT, CIT, and CBI.

It’s worth noting that the Vegas Sixteen event that was introduced last season will not be played this season, but the founders are hopeful that it can return next year.

Arguably our favourite tournament, from a sheer team standpoint, is the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The field is composed of ‘mid-major’ programs who are deserving of a post-season berth, and it uses the old NIT format, where there is no set bracket.

The CIT has several marquee games in the first round which pay homage to past coaches in college basketball. They have added several ‘classics’ to this year’s slate, which adds more appeal to the event.

The second annual John McLendon Classic will be played on Monday night, which opens up post-season play across the country. The Liberty Flames will play host to the Norfolk State Spartans, in what is a great way to kick off an exciting three-week stretch of post-season basketball. NORFOLK, Va. — Once again, the Norfolk State Spartans are in contention for the MEAC title, and they are one of the hottest teams in the country that nobody is talking about.

The Spartans burst onto the national scene back during the 2012 NCAA Tournament, when they knocked off the 2-seed Missouri Tigers in the Round of 64 as a 15-seed themselves. While they would fall in the next round, the Spartans garnered national attention that was well deserved.

Fast forward to 2017, and the Spartans are once again trending upwards in the MEAC. On Saturday, they put their seven game winning streak on the line when they welcomed the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks to Norfolk, VA.

It was the only meeting between the two this season, and the Spartans were looking to keep on the right track, while the Hawks were looking to move up in the MEAC standings.

Early on, the Hawks took control, leading by as many as 16 points late in the first half. They held a slim two-point lead with under four minutes to play in the game, but the Spartans completed their comeback shortly thereafter.

Thanks to a 21-point, 11-rebound performance from Jonathan Wade, the Spartans clawed their way back in the second half and extended their winning streak to eight with a 75-69 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore.
