NORMAL, Ill. — After losing their four game losing streak in their last outing, the Illinois State Redbirds got some redemption on Sunday in their 72-68 win over the Missouri State Bears.
The Redbirds fell to the Drake Bulldogs in their last outing, bringing an end to their four game win streak. At home on Sunday, Illinois State was looking to start a new streak at the expense of Missouri State, who came into the day riding their own four game winning streak. Thanks to 23 points apiece from Phil Fayne and Milik Yarbrough, the Redbirds bounced back and held down their home court.
Missouri State gave the Redbirds a fight in the second half. After trailing by as many as 10 points in the second frame, the Bears managed to take a three-point lead of their own with under four minutes to play. Illinois State wouldn’t allow the Bears to pull ahead any further, and they retook the lead in the closing minutes to secure the 72-68 win on their home floor.
SPRINGFIELD, MO. — Ever since his arrival on campus, Ronnie Rousseau III had been a big piece of the rotation for the Missouri State Bears in 2016-17.
He transferred to the Bears from State Fair Community College, where he averaged 23.2 points per game as a sophomore, earning him NCJAA Division I Second Team All-American honours in the process. Along with the likes of Alize Johnson, the Bears landed some talented jUCO transfers for this season.
NORMAL, Ill. — The Missouri State Bears will be without one of their star JUCO transfers tonight.
Reported by Jim Connell of Springfield News-Leader, the Bears will be without junior Ronnie Rousseau III for this evening’s showdown with Illinois State. The 5’10” guard was originally listed as a game-time decision after injuring his ankle versus Indiana State on Saturday.
Rousseau III, an NJCAA Division I All-American second teamer, is averaging 11.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists within one of the most talented backcourts in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native has scored in double-figures 8 of Missouri State’s 15 games.
As of yesterday, Rousseau III had not practiced since injuring his ankle. Per Connell, who received word from Missouri State SID Rick Kindhart, the junior re-tweaked his ankle in practice prior to tonight’s contest.
Sophomore Ryan Kreklow will start in place of Rousseau III. The in-state product is producing 8.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game this season. He is also shooting 43.9% from beyond the arc and 90.5% from the charity stripe. In fact, Kreklow sealed the Bears’ first Missouri Valley Conference victory with four made free throws.
The Missouri State Bears take on the Illinois State Redbirds at 9 p.m. EST. Both teams are 2-0 in conference play. College Court Report will have full coverage from Redbird Arena.
