Assembling a Mid-Major Dream Team for the 2017-18 Season

Jock Landale emerged as one of the nation’s top big men as a junior in 2016-17, increasing his scoring average from 7.9 points per game to 16.9.

CANMORE, Alta. — The level of parity in college basketball in recent years is at an all-time high.

Still, on a nightly basis, mid-major teams are often the underdogs against power conference teams. The likes of the Kentucky WildcatsDuke Blue Devils, and other blue-blood programs land the top high school recruits each season, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a ton of talent elsewhere in the country.

Smaller programs have just as much talent on their roster, but their names don’t come with the same pedigree as the ones in the ESPN Top 100. So, we thought we would filter through all of the mid-major schools and assemble our own Dream Team for the 2017-18 season.

We assembled a 14-man roster that we would want to see play together. The team is open to interpretation, and can be assembled in an endless number of ways. But, this is a team we think would contend with the best of the best in the NCAA.

Thursday night may have only had 11 games on the slate, but it most definitely provided its fair share of excitement, and then some.

Two ranked teams were in action on the night. They both lost.

A Conference USA powerhouse took on yet another team from the SEC. They won for the third straight time against teams from the conference.

There were some career-best performances across the country (Shamorie Ponds and Maurius Hill, we’re talking about you), and an ugly performance from the Fordham Rams.

Despite only having 11 games on tap, Thursday was a night to remember. Here are Thursday’s Headlines. Continue reading Thursday Headlines: UT-Arlington Scores First-Ever Win over a Ranked Team, Middle Tennessee Wreaks Havoc on the SEC, and More

For the first time in a long time, the Gonzaga Bulldogs didn’t look unbeatable in the West Coast Conference. They failed to win the regular season crown, and it looked as if they needed to win the post-season tournament to keep their NCAA Tournament streak intact.

Firmly on the bubble, the Bulldogs entered Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, NV on a mission. Wins over the Portland Pilots and the BYU Cougars put the Bulldogs one win away from dancing in March for the 18th consecutive season.

Only one team stood in their way, and that was the regular season champion Saint Mary’s Gaels. By virtue of a tiebreaker, the Gales finished atop the conference despite both teams having identical 15-3 records in conference play.

Gonzaga was swept in the regular season by the Gaels, and were out for some redemption. On a neutral court, and with the title on the line, the Bulldogs won when it mattered most.

With their 85-75 win over the Gaels in the West Coast Conference finale, the Gonzaga Bulldogs are back in the Big Dance once more, and all is right in the college basketball world, at least for the time being.
