Big first half leads UT-Rio Grande Valley past Bethune-Cookman, 92-74

Nick Dixon scored a team-high 18 points, the Vaqueros had six players score at least eight points in their 92-74 win over Bethune-Cookman on Monday night.

EDINBURG, Tex. — They may have only played a pair of games so far in 2017-18, but the UT-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros have put up their fair share of points.

In their opener on Friday night, the Vaqueros put up 106 points on the Nicholls Colonels, but still came away with the loss. The Colonels spoiled the Vaqueros’ home opener with the 111-106 win in a shootout.

On Monday, the Vaqueros were looking to get the first win out of the way when they welcomed the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats to Edinburg. The Wildcats were coming off a win in their opener, as they topped Johnson University (FL) on Friday, 108-66.

Malik Maitland opened the scoring for the Wildcats, giving the visitors an early 2-0 lead. Xavier McDaniel, Jr. answered with a jumper for the Vaqueros on the next possession, and UTRGV was off and rolling.

Bethune-Cookman wouldn’t hold another lead the rest of the way, and it was also the last time that the game would be tied on the night. The Vaqueros put up 51 points in the first frame, and took a 19-point lead into the break.

They maintained their lead all throughout the second frame, and picked up the 92-74 win for their first victory of 2017-18. Continue reading Big first half leads UT-Rio Grande Valley past Bethune-Cookman, 92-74

Now, not all of the 13 teams have released their non-conference slates as of yet, so this is a list that will undoubtedly be revised at a later date.

EDINBURG, Tex. — As the off-season continues to roll along, more and more big names seem to be hitting the transfer market in the later months.

Just a couple weeks ago, sophomore guard C.J. Bryce announced he was transferring from the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, and he committed to Kevin Keatts and the NC State Wolfpack a short time later.

Now, on Friday afternoon, the transfer market picked up some more depth by way of a player who has flown under the radar for two years in the WAC.

For fans outside of the WAC, and the state of Texas, paying attention to the UT-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros isn’t high on their priority list. However, over the past two years, those fans have missed the emergence of a talented scoring guard who is now looking for his new home.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, sophomore guard Antonio Green has announced his intentions to transfer after two seasons with the Vaqueros. Continue reading Antonio Green to transfer from UT-Rio Grande Valley after two seasons
