After the majority of their games being on the road to open the 2016-17 season, the UT-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros were back in Edinburg, TX for a three-game homestand.
Convincing wins over the Texas State Bobcats and the North Florida Ospreys kicked off the homestand. Those wins pushed the Vaqueros’ home record to 4-1 on the year.
On Friday night, the Lamar Cardinals made the trip to Edinburg for a date with UTRGV. In their last outing, the Cardinals put an end to their three game losing streak with a 51-point win over Austin College.
With the exhibition season in full swing, and coming to a close early this week, that can mean only one thing.
The 2016-17 college basketball regular season is just around the corner!
Things get underway Friday, November 11th at Noon EST with the first regular season game of the season, and there will be a plethora of talent on display across all 32 conferences all season long.
Before the season gets started, we decided to hand out some preseason hardware, in the form of our Conference Player of the Year award and All-Conference Teams.
Along with that, we have the College Court Report All-Americans, and the Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Watch List. Links to all of the conference awards and the Watch List can be found at the bottom of each article.
The off-season leading up to the 2015-16 NCAA basketball season has been a busy one down in the Rio Grande Valley.
Two schools became one, as the University of Texas – Pan American and the University of Texas – Brownville became the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley. The change-over has been in the works since December of 2012, and it came to full-fruition in the early stages of 2015.
With UTRGV having a new look, in terms of official colours, logo, and team nickname, the future is bright for the institution on an academic level. The hope is that the school can experience some success in terms of sporting teams in the very near future.
One team in particular that is a big focus of the institution is the men’s basketball program. Playing out of the Western Athletic Conference, the conference has been dominated by the New Mexico State Aggies for the past few seasons, but the Vaqueros are hoping to change that.
